Goldwork Presentation by Sorcha O’Raw and Workshop

  • Community Centre, Church of St. Thérèse, Mt Merrion A94 R2Y4 Ireland (map)

Presentation:

Sorcha O’Raw is an embroidery artist specialising in Goldwork, a type of embroidery which uses metal threads and wires for a raised, metallic effect. She found goldwork embroidery while interning at the historic Hand & Lock. As a technique it oozes decadence and is a clear symbol of the value of whatever it depicts. Historically used by the military and the church to communicate their wealth and power, Sorcha looks to modernise it to communicate a kind of emotional wealth and a national identity for a country founded in the 20th century. In her presentation, she will talk about the history of goldwork, how she came to find it and how and why she uses it.

Workshop:

13:30 - 16:00

Cost: €65 (includes materials)

The afternoon workshop will cover the basics of goldwork, including string padding, laying purl, and couching pearl purl and Jap thread. Some embroidery experience is essential.
